How to encourage creativity!

Written by: Jean Jeppson Clay

Do you have creative kids? I’m sure the answer is yes!

I believe all children are very creative even if it’s in their own way. Sometimes they may be encouraged or maybe they get discouraged or disappointed. Hopefully this doesn’t happen. Children will do much better in all aspects of their life’s if their creativity is encouraged and supported. How to do this as parents, teachers or guardians?

1. Have a certain ‘place’ for them to create, a corner with a desk, or a table just for them.

2. Have supplies there, in a box or cupboard. Crayons, markers, coloring pages, scissors, glue sticks, Clay (my personal favorite) a package of handy wipes is helpful.

3. Let them be messy, but they should also learn to clean up after themselves.

4. This is very important! Don’t say “What is it?’ let them tell you about it. You can say “I like the colors you picked” or “what a great design!” Just don’t judge expressions of their creativity. You could display their art or put it in a special place for awhile. Please never let them see you throw it away!

6. Do the same for yourself, make a place, have your supplies available and never belittle what you have done. You are the example they will follow! Creating is stress relieving and fun!
